Plating Study 02 is a piece of colorful abstract art built around a broad ochre brushstroke that curves across the composition, bringing together a series of contrasting colours and geometric shapes.
A vivid cobalt-blue circle anchors the centre-left, while a crimson triangle, charcoal diamond and mustard square occupy the surrounding space. Fine diagonal lines, scattered red splashes and smaller painted marks interrupt the warm ivory background, adding movement without overwhelming the composition.
From the Kitchen to the Studio
The Plating Studies began during Lee’s years working in Michelin-starred kitchens, where arranging colour, shape and negative space was an everyday part of developing a dish.
Some of those original plating sketches eventually became paintings, worked on during days off — usually with a beer nearby and considerably less pressure than a busy restaurant service.
Plating Study 02 retains something of that original process. Its individual elements are deliberately positioned, but the broad brushwork and scattered marks give the finished artwork a freedom that goes well beyond its culinary beginnings.
