Plating Study 03 is a piece of colorful abstract art that brings together a strong central form and an energetic arrangement of expressive brushwork.
A large cobalt-blue circle dominates the warm ivory background, its concentric painted rings creating a sense of depth and movement. Around it, sweeping strokes of crimson, orange, yellow and green move across the corners of the composition, accompanied by scattered paint marks and small mustard-yellow triangles.
A bold black angular form cuts into the lower-left area, providing a striking contrast to the circular centre. Fine curved black lines echo the movement of the blue rings without competing with them.
From the Kitchen to the Studio
The Plating Studies originated during Lee’s years working in Michelin-starred kitchens, where creating a dish involved more than choosing ingredients. Colour, arrangement, balance and the space between individual elements were all part of the process.
Some of those plating sketches eventually became paintings, developed on days off — usually with a beer nearby and no restaurant service to worry about.
Plating Study 03 carries that original approach into a more expressive setting. Its central form holds the composition together, while the surrounding marks introduce a freedom and spontaneity that turn an early plating idea into a standalone piece of contemporary abstract art.
