Plating Study 04 is a piece of colorful abstract art built around two broad cobalt-blue brushstrokes that sweep across the warm ivory background, creating a striking sense of movement.
Within the space formed by these expressive blue marks sits a vivid magenta circle, balanced against a mustard-yellow triangle and a strong black diagonal. Rich crimson and orange brushwork occupies the upper-right and lower-left areas, while scattered turquoise and white marks add smaller moments of contrast throughout the composition.
The result is an artwork that feels energetic without losing its balance. The larger forms establish the structure, while the expressive painted marks give it freedom and character.
From the Kitchen to the Studio
The Plating Studies originated during Lee’s years working in Michelin-starred kitchens, where developing a dish involved considering colour, balance, placement and the space between individual elements.
Some of those original plating sketches eventually became paintings, worked on during days off — usually with a beer nearby and considerably less pressure than a busy restaurant service.
Plating Study 04 retains that original relationship between careful arrangement and creative freedom. What began as an idea for presenting food became a standalone piece of contemporary abstract art, with its own identity well beyond the kitchen.
