Plating Study 01 is a piece of colorful abstract art that brings expressive brushwork and carefully placed geometric forms together in one lively composition.
A broad ochre stroke travels diagonally across the warm ivory background, creating movement between a deep teal form, mustard circle, crimson diamond and charcoal square. Smaller painted marks and splashes interrupt the surrounding space, giving the composition its spontaneous character.
From the Kitchen to the Studio
The Plating Studies began as sketches during Lee’s years working in Michelin-starred kitchens. Exploring the arrangement of colour, shape and negative space was already part of the creative process long before these ideas became standalone artworks.
The sketches were subsequently developed into paintings on days off, away from the demands of the kitchen — usually accompanied by a beer.
Plating Study 01 retains that combination of considered placement and spontaneous expression. Its culinary origins are part of the story, but the finished work stands independently as contemporary abstract art.
